Moore’s Law on the Camera? This month Aimetis reaches a significant milestone by launching the Aimetis People Counter, available on select AXIS cameras. The pros of embedded analytics fundamentally relate to scalability. By processing video directly on the camera, we reduce the server bottleneck found in concentrated PC based analytic deployments. Depending on the setup, embedded analytics can additionally reduce network bandwidth and storage, which results in significant cost savings. Lower maintenance is another key win for embedded analytics, since no additional hardware needs to be installed or managed. Of course the major disadvantage has always been inadequate processing power at the edge. Trading scalability for analytics accuracy is a tough choice! However, Moore's Law is alleviating this tension. Think of a network camera as a tiny computer. It has an operating system, storage, and of course a processor. Will Moore's Law apply to network cameras, where processing power will roughly double every two years? Eventually it will, having a profound impact. The days of trading scalability for accuracy will be replaced by an industry full of easy to install, manage and use video analytics products. The future is bright, and the Aimetis People Counter release signals the beginning of a new era in video surveillance-where embedded analytics finally becomes accessible to the mass market. As camera processing power continues to improve, the technology barriers of deploying video analytics continues to fall. Sincerely, Justin Schorn VP Product Development
