What's the Big Deal with Server Farms?

Lately there is a lot of talk about server farms. Why all the fuss? When is it useful?

In short, a server farm is a group of physical servers that are operating together on the network as part of one, unified system. This offers centralized server management and higher reliability and scalability than previously possible. Normal CCTV systems require cameras to be directly connected to the recording device (such as a DVR), and if the recorder fails, access to those cameras (and the recorded video) goes with it. Alternatively, an IP based system connects to the cameras across the network, and since there is no physical connection, any server can act for another in the case of failure.

Here's how it works. At least two physical servers must be installed on the network, and each will have access to network based storage for video archiving as well as the network cameras themselves. Everything is "connected" through a network switch. One server is recording video to the network storage through the LAN while the second server is monitoring the health of the first. If the first server fails, the second immediately connects to the cameras and continues video recording. Video playback remains available since the redundant server also has access to the centralized video storage through the LAN.

This extra reliability is extremely appropriate in mission critical deployments. Administration is also greatly simplified, as a centralized database is shared between all servers eliminating duplicate configuration between servers. For example, adding a new user more than once is unnecessary as all servers will share the same database. If multiple DVRs are used, duplicating configuration such as alarm schedules, rules, user access, etc are necessary and cumbersome.

Aimetis Symphony™ has an architecture which supports Server Farms and consequently offers simplified configuration and management while delivering higher reliability to the end user. This level of scalability and reliability is not available in analog CCTV deployments.

Aimetis Symphony™ Selected to Secure Critical Infrastructure Facilities

As a critical infrastructure provider, Con Edison is responsible for providing power to the entire Tri-State area, including New York and therefore takes important precautions to prevent and respond to threats on its facilities. With thousands of cameras installed to monitor internal and external theft, perimeter breaches, and other suspicious behavior at its Power Distribution, Seaside and Port facilities, Con Edison required a solution to intelligently manage the wealth of video data to ensure threats are detected and responded to quickly and efficiently.

After an extensive evaluation of video analytics providers, Con Edison selected Aimetis Symphony as its intelligent video management software solution. Aimetis Symphony outperformed the competition in terms of analytics accuracy, ease-of-use, stability and network security. The software provides reliable real-time alerting of potentially significant events as well as in-depth reporting tools to improve security and operational efficiencies.
